FILIPINIANA (by: Ruel A. Mayo)
Stegodon (Elephas Beyeri)
Fossils of the stegodon, an extinct elephant-like mammal believed to be
two million years old, were discovered in Trece Hermanas quarry in
Barangay Peñafrancia, Marikina in July 1986 by the National Institute of
Geological Science (NIGS) of the University of the Philippines. Dr.
Walter Scholl, a visiting Geology professor, confirmed the fossil as
those of Stegodon-a dwarf elephant with four long tusks.
